nikon-coolpix-l840-memory-cardOn the hunt for a memory card for the Nikon Coolpix L840? Are you confused about the many different options available and have no clue which one to get? Well it is a good thing you landed on this page! Below, I am going to highlight which memory cards are the best for this camera, as well as give some detailed information on the different memory cards available. When you are done, you should have a better understanding on camera memory cards, especially for the Nikon L840.

Best Nikon Coolpix L840

There are really a ton of memory cards to choose from, so how do you know which one is the best to go with?

The choices we list below are based on practical use and price, performance and speed were the main factors I looked at when recommending the cards below.

Each memory card on the list are highly rated and currently the best options on the market right now.

Without a doubt, the 128 GB SD card is really the only memory card that you need right now for your camera. It is the perfect combination of having amazing storage space, as well as being relatively cheap.

The card like this, you should be able to take thousands of pictures, without worrying about it getting filled up, the same would go for videos. These cards are also not expensive, so you definitely do not have to break the bank to ensure optimal storage space for your camera.

The 64GB card is also not a bad option to have as well. It is half the space and price of the 128gbGB, but it is still a good amount of storage space. You won’t be filling it up anytime soon and if you are lightweight photographer this just works! The price is also peanuts and it won’t cost you much to get one.

While I would say the top two cards are really the best options available, I will also recommend the 256GB SDXC. This is a card for people who are looking to maximize the storage capacity of the L840 You will be able to store an insane amount of pictures and videos on the card.

Performance wise, it is top notch and the price is not over the top expensive, but the cost is justifiable for what you getting.

Nikon CoolPix L840 Memory Card Types

I know that some of you might be a bit confused when you have been looking up the different type of memory cards that can be used in the Nikon CoolPix L840.  I am pretty sure you’ve been seeing in different terms such as SD, SDHC and SDXC and have probably just sat there with a confused look on your face like what on earth is all of this?

Well I’m going to clear up the confusion by giving an overview into the different type of memory cards that can be used in the camera, as well as that might just and disadvantages of each one.

  • SD CardsThis memory card format can hold up to 2GB of images and video.
  • SDHC CardsThis memory card format can hold up to 32GB of images and video.
  • SDXC CardsThis memory card format can upwards of 48GB of images and video.
  • Micro SD (With SD Adapter) – This memory card format can hold up to 4GB of images and video.
  • Micro SDHC (With SD Adapter) – This memory card can hold up to 32GB of images and video.
  • Micro SDXC (With SD Adapter) – This memory card can hold up to 2TB of images and video.

So off the bat, the SD, SDC, SDXC are essentially the same type of card. They have the same size, same dimenisions….they are really physically the same. The difference comes in with their storage capacity. I go into a lot more detail when I explain the differences between SD  SDHC SDXC cards. Nonetheless

What Size Card Should I Get?

It can be a bit challenging trying to figure out what memory card size you are going to need for the Nikon Coolpix L840. If you look at my recommendations above, you will see that I suggest that you go with a 64GB card, simply because that is the perfect size and it is also pretty cheap. You won’t have to worry about spending a crazy amount of money on memory and the 128 GB card will take a long time to fill up. You can take tons of pictures and videos and not have to worry about it getting full.

The 64GB & 256GB SDXC card options are on opposite ends of the spectrum. I like the 64GB as it is a really cheap card and will give you a considerable amount of storage space, however if you plan on taking a lot of pictures/videos, then this could fill up pretty quickly. On the other end, there is the 256GB, which has a massive amount of storage space. It is a bit pricey, but still affordable and this will give you an insane amount of storage space.

So as you can see, the size card you get is really dependent on how you plan on using the camera, or what you can afford.

What You Need to Know About Card Speeds

All memory cards come with different speed ratings. If you are just getting a card for the camera, then there is no real need to concern yourself with card speed as all the options I listed above are fast enough. However, for this Nikon L840, it is recommended that you get a memory card that is a Class 6 or higher.

To understand what the different speed classes mean, take a look at my breakdown below:

  • Class 2 – Minimum of 2 MB/s performance. (Slowest)
  • Class 4 – Minimum of 4 MB/s performance. (Slow)
  • Class 6 – Minimum of 6 MB/s performance.  (OK)
  • Class 10 – Minimum of 10 MB/s performance. (Average)
  • UHS-I UI – Minimum of 10 MB/s performance. (Fast)
  • UHS-I U3 – Minimum of 30 MB/s performance. (Really Fast)

The speed class just indicates the write speed of the card, which means how quickly the images/videos can be saved to card.
